The NSW Parliament has launched an inquiry into loneliness and social isolation, holding its first public hearing this week. This important inquiry aims to examine the impact of loneliness across NSW communities and identify ways to improve social connection and well-being.
Aspect welcomes the focus on this critical issue and has submitted a detailed response to the inquiry. Our submission emphasises that Autistic people are at high risk for loneliness and social isolation. However, the prevalence of loneliness and social isolation among Autistic adults in NSW is not yet comprehensively measured or recorded, leaving a critical void in the data needed to address this issue effectively.
We highlight the need for community-based support structures and tailored interventions to foster inclusion and reduce social isolation among Autistic people. We understand that the response to such an inquiry will include prevention steps and we strongly suggest that the lived experiences of Autistic people are included in the planning and implementation of these responses.
Aspect looks forward to the outcomes of the hearing and the opportunity to further explore solutions that promote meaningful social connection for all. Loneliness remains a key research focus at Aspect, and we are committed to continuing this work with expanded investigations in the coming year.
