The 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade was held on Saturday 6 March with the Neurodiversity Rainbow representing the Autistic LGBTQIA+ community and marching with pride.
This year looked a little different with the parade held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The location enabled the event to be more structured than in previous years which was supportive to our participants. They had a fantastic time dressed in gold, celebrating the theme ‘Rise’. It was an incredible experience for all
It was an important event for Aspect and the Neurodiversity Rainbow participants to be a part of. Research suggests that Autistic people report increased homosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality (George and Stokes, 2018) and Autistic people are more likely to be gender and sexually diverse than the rest of the population. Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) are committed to active support of all people on the autism spectrum. This includes a large cohort of people living under the double rainbow intersection of both the disability and LGBTQIA+ communities.
