On Saturday, March 1st, Aspect proudly took part in 2025 Sydney Mardi Gras parade, celebrating the intersection of neurodiversity and LGBTQIA+ pride. This year marked The Neurodivergent Rainbow’s 7th year in the parade, and we marched with over 30 Aspect staff, students, participants, and Autistic community members, all embracing the theme: “Free to Be: Intersectional” 🌈

Inspired by the bold and colourful 80s aesthetic, our marching group used geometric designs and Venn diagrams to visually represent intersectionality—the way multiple identities, such as being Autistic and LGBTQIA+, shape unique experiences. The energy, joy, and unity among our group showcased Aspect’s commitment to visibility, acceptance, and empowerment.

One of the most powerful moments of the night came as we marched past a section of the crowd, and a group of people cheered wildly, shouting “Me too! Me too!”—a proud and spontaneous moment of connection as they recognised themselves in us. It was a beautiful reminder of why representation matters—seeing Autistic pride on full display resonated with so many in the crowd.

Creating space for inclusion: Aspect’s Quiet Tents

While we marched loud and proud, we also recognised the importance of making Mardi Gras accessible for everyone. That’s why Aspect ran two Quiet Tents—one in the marshalling area and another in the accessible viewing area—to provide a calm, sensory-friendly retreat for those needing a break from the noise and crowds.

Each tent was stocked with:

✅ Bean bags for comfort
✅ Refrigerated water to stay cool
✅ Fidget toys and earplugs for sensory regulation

The feedback was overwhelmingly positive! Parade-goers appreciated having a space to refresh, recharge, and re-join the celebrations on their terms. By offering these spaces, Aspect and Mardi Gras ensured everyone can be part of the event in a way that works for them.

To everyone who marched, cheered, and celebrated—thank you for making this such a special night for the neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ communities!
