MEDIA RELEASE
Sydney, Australia: Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit autism-specific service providers, warmly welcomes the release of Australia’s inaugural National Autism Strategy. This landmark initiative marks a significant step towards building a society where all Autistic individuals are supported and empowered to thrive.
The seven-year strategy, launched today, represents a turning point in addressing both the challenges and opportunities faced by Autistic Australians.
Jacqui Borland, CEO of Aspect, described the National Autism Strategy and First Year Action Plan as a vital milestone in recognising the diversity within the Autistic community and the need for a ‘whole of society’ approach to create a truly inclusive future for Autistic Australians and their families.
“The government’s initial $42.3 million investment demonstrates a genuine commitment to achieving the Strategy’s goals, particularly in areas such as peer-led programs, research translation and diagnostic accessibility,” said Ms Borland. “The emphasis on diversity, inclusion and co-design with Autistic people reflects respect for lived experience and expertise, which is essential for driving meaningful change.
“We know this first-hand as Aspect’s services and support for people on the autism spectrum and their families are continuously improved by applying latest evidence and evaluating for best practice. Our own Aspect Research Centre for Autism Practice (ARCAP), works with Autistic individuals, their families and practitioners to address real-world challenges and deliver solutions that enhance everyday life for people on the autism spectrum.”
Ms Borland further highlighted the importance of the Strategy’s evidence-based approach.
“I’m encouraged by the commitment to build upon proven strategies and successes—both in Australia and internationally—that are already making a positive difference for people on the autism spectrum. And while the prioritisation of key cohorts may spark some healthy debate, it will be important to target support where it is needed most.”
The Strategy’s focus on social and economic inclusion, health and access to diagnosis and services, align strongly with Aspect’s mission to build inclusive and equitable environments for all Autistic Australians.
“This Strategy not only addresses barriers faced by Autistic individuals but also highlights their strengths and contributions,” Ms Borland added. “It’s a call to action for our nation to collaborate in fostering environments where Autistic people can flourish, simply by being themselves.”
Aspect also applauds the actionable framework of the Strategy, particularly its emphasis on phased implementation, monitoring and evaluation. “The importance of this Strategy as the first significant step for real change cannot be underestimated. I am optimistic that during this decade we will see tangible outcomes that positively impact the lives of Autistic Australians and their families. Aspect is proud to contribute our expertise to ensure the Strategy’s success.”
