What are Autism Alert Cards?
Autism Alert Cards are designed to help Autistic people convey their needs in situations where verbal communication may be difficult. With an “I am Autistic” statement and tailored guidance for the recipient, the card aims to foster supportive responses.
The cards are available in two formats:
- A folded cardboard version with space for personal details and tips for assistance.
- A durable plastic card featuring a QR code linking to additional resources.
How are these cards different to others you may have seen?
What makes these cards unique is their co-production with Autistic individuals and the incorporation of feedback from over 270 Autistic people and parents in a recent Aspect study.
What did the research tell us about people with an Autism Alert Card?
- Approximately half of the people had used the card, but there were benefits to having a card even if it wasn’t used.
- Over two-thirds would recommend Autistic people have one.
- Most participants shared that it had been helpful, and the reactions had been fairly positive.
How can an Autism Alert Card help you?
For many, simply having the card provides reassurance – a “safety net” in case it’s needed. The cards’ co-designed features make them practical, informative, and empowering, fostering smoother interactions in diverse settings. Whether it’s navigating public transport, visiting healthcare providers, or interacting with emergency services, the card can act as a bridge for understanding.
How to get a card?
The Autism Alert Cards are available for free through Aspect’s website. While they are most suited for adolescents and adults, they’re designed for any Autistic person in Australia and can be ordered confidentially.
